It began with a night visit to the Sangum Vihar slums of New Delhi in September of 2008. Pastor Koshy and Joicy of the Carmel Community Ministries of New Delhi led members of the Pennsylvania Delaware Women of Purpose India team through the slums. When they arrived at a small, dimly lit shack with a blanket for a door, they were introduced to a family who had recently lost their only son.
As the team crowded into the 4 x 6 ft home, they noticed a little girl, Konica, with a crippled arm. The team members prayed for Konica and witnessed God’s immediate, miraculous healing power. It was a time of great praise and rejoicing.
Months later, the team learned that Konica had been sold by her parents because they could no longer afford to feed and care for her. However, Pastor Koshy and Joicy intervened and bought the child back.
Konica, whose story inspired the Redemption Home project, is only one of thousands of young girls in the slums of India, orphaned or at risk of being sold by parents who are unable to feed and clothe their children. The goal of the Redemption Home project is to rescue the girls before they are abused, dehumanized, drugged and beaten into submission.
Miraculously, a piece of prime land has been purchased for $44,000 and construction has already begun on the Redemption Home building. Construction costs are estimated at $148,000 with completion expected by the end of the year. After its completion, there will be ongoing costs for operation of the facility and sponsorships for the girls living there.
Often trafficking victims are "recruited" from the poorer, rural areas and victims are transported to major cities or even across the borders to other countries where they are alone and helpless to find help to escape.
Read this recent article about trafficking in Mexico which happened in Oaxaca where the Hadingers minister.
Though not directly involved with helping trafficking victims, the Hadingers are on the front lines, bringing the hope of Christ to those living in Oaxaca and surrounding regions of Mexico! Prevention truly starts with spreading Christ's Light and Life to those who are living in darkness!
Their efforts to remove women and girls who have been forced into prostitution begin with providing long-term shelter in a safe place in which trust and healing can develop. This often includes:
During the first year of their efforts, Project Rescue utilized their financial resources to dismiss many young girls' "debts" to brothel owners, so that her freedom could be obtained. As they began to better understand the sexual slavery trade and comprehend the horrors in the trafficking system, however, they realized that this strategy only put money back into the hands of organized crime; money that was then used to enslave other young girls.
Today, Project Rescue takes a different approach. They've established strong relationships with local police, city government officials, and even brothel owners who have come to trust their organization. Project Rescue workers are now recognized and trusted in the cities' red-light districts and have become known for showing genuine kindness and demonstrating Christ's example of love in tangible ways.
Texas is a major hub for human trafficking, ranking second only to California.
Interstate 10 has been designated as the main route for traffickers by the Department of Justice.
Houston is considered a main trafficking hub city and a major destination. In 2001, around 3,600 victims were located in Texas. The second largest trafficking bust in U.S. history occurred in Houston in 2007.
Officials are working to stem the influx of traffiicked individuals, but what happens to them when they are rescued?
Home of Hope Texas is in the process of constructing a long term facility to house trafficking victims, where they can receive shelter, medical care and counseling in their struggle to regain their lives and human dignity.
They are currently developing an Intake Center near South Houston where rescued girls and women will be assessed to identify their medical, emotional and other needs. The center will serve as a short term facility until the main facility is completed.
Over 1,000,000 children are trafficked into various forms of slavery every year. They are kidnapped, lured or sold into sex trafficking, slave labor or child soldiering.
Orphans are at risk more than any other groups in our society because of their lack of protectors, social naivete, and emotional issues of abandonment. Traffickers tend to target orphans because no one will come looking for them if they disappear. Because they have few skills and little experience coping with life outside the orphanage walls, they become easy prey for job scams, alcohol/drug addiction and suicide.
Orphans provide an easily accessible source of "dosposable goods" for their traffickers. In some cases, traffickers have recruits inside the orphanages who alert them when a child comes of age and must leave the orphanage. Others may arrange illegal adoptions or falsify paperwork for a fee, allowing children to be placed with slavers or sex traffickers.
Vision To Becca was founded by Scott and Jen Pusey who adopted a handi-capable Chinese orphan.
