Ruth feels powerless to escape the shame and abuse she suffers at the hand of her father, Ben-Hadad. All her life she has prayed for deliverance to the images of Baal to no avail. The gods lear at her, reminding her that she is no better than  Lot's own daughters who made their father drink wine and seduced him.

She remembers stories she heard as a child about Abraham, the wealthy nomadic uncle of their ancestor Lot. In desperation, she prays to Abraham's God, unsure if such a mighty God would care for a worthless foreigner, a "daughter of Lot."
